Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra names Benjamin Klemme music director
New IVSO Music Director Benjamin Klemme guest conducting the orchestra on May 2nd, 2026—“One Summer in Spillville”
The Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra (IVSO) has named Benjamin Klemme as its next music director.
Klemme was selected following his guest conducting appearance during the orchestra's May season finale, "One Summer in Spillville."
"The orchestra and board overwhelmingly voted in favor of Ben's hire, demonstrating so clearly how his kind leadership style combined with his musical technicality and rich depth of knowledge made an impact," said Aelsa Woods, general manager of the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra. "We're thrilled to be moving into a new era of the IVSO with Ben at the helm of the orchestra."
Klemme serves on the faculty of Wheaton College, where he holds the conducting position previously held by the IVSO's immediate past music director, Daniel Sommerville.
Reflecting on his decision to join the IVSO, Klemme said the organization's mission and community drew him to the position.
"I was initially drawn to the IVSO's commitment to ensuring everyone in the Illinois Valley has opportunities to discover, experience and enjoy orchestral music through access to high-quality live performances," Klemme said, affirming that his experience working with the orchestra reinforced that impression.
"From the opening measures of our first rehearsal together, the IVSO musicians made their strong commitment to artistic excellence and joy abundantly clear," he said. "Throughout our collaboration, I drew much inspiration from their musicianship and collaborative generosity."
He also praised the organization's staff, board and supporters.
"This same creative energy is also demonstrated by the IVSO's staff and board members, who lead with compelling expertise and vision," Klemme added. "When you combine these organizational qualities with the enthusiastic support of the IVSO's audience, it is clear this musical community has an exceptionally bright future."
As music director, Klemme will oversee the orchestra's artistic vision, programming and musical leadership.
Looking ahead to his first season, Klemme said he is eager to build relationships with musicians and audiences throughout the Illinois Valley.
"I am excited to share some of my favorite pieces with the IVSO musicians and audience…I look forward to all we'll discover about one another, the community we share and the art form we love."
Founded in 1949, the Illinois Valley Symphony Orchestra serves north-central Illinois through performances, educational initiatives and community engagement. Additional details about the orchestra's upcoming season will be announced in the coming weeks.
